Settler Violence Threatens Palestinian Olive Harvest in the West Bank

By Drooid · · How we work

Olive Harvest Under Assault

During the first week of October 2026, Palestinian farmers attempting to begin the olive-picking season were attacked across the occupied West Bank. On October 3 in Jabal Qamas, between Osarin and Beita south of Nablus, settlers from the illegal Mevaser Shalom outpost assaulted a family of harvesters, leaving Hussam Adily in critical condition and injuring his brother and mother. Similar assaults were reported in the villages of Rantis, Sebastia, Beit Imrin, Deir Sharaf, Aqraba, az-Zawiya, Ramin and Arrabuna, where farmers were pepper-sprayed, run over, or beaten with sticks and fists, requiring hospital treatment.

Pattern of Violence and Property Damage

Settlers also stole harvested olives, ladders and tarps in Sinjil, Rafat, Kafr Ra’i and Faqqua, and torched roughly 55 olive trees near Abu Dis, destroying a family’s fresh harvest. In addition, they drove flocks through Palestinian groves in Burqa, al-Mughayyir and Beit Duqqu, ruining crops. Israeli soldiers frequently blocked access, turning farmers away from land in Deir Istiya, Farkha, Haris, az-Zawiya and Silwan, confiscating identification cards and, in some cases, tools.

Official Statements and Legal Responses

President Isaac Herzog said Israeli politicians “have not done everything” to curb settler pogroms, following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s description of a mass settler attack on Jalud as the work of a “small number” of rioters. The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly weighing sanctions against Israeli military units and a blacklist of officers, though any measures are being held back until after Israel’s October 27 election and the U.S. midterms. The United Kingdom has suspended or rejected more than 80 arms-export licences to Israel since 2024 while continuing to supply components for the F-35 programme. Israel demanded that the UK close its consulate in occupied East Jerusalem by October 8. The Israeli Supreme Court unanimously reinstated the United Arab List and the Joint List to the ballot and voted 7-2 to reinstate far-left lawmaker Ofer Cassif; the court also fined National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir for using a Hamas prisoner in a campaign video.

Humanitarian Toll in Gaza and the West Bank

The Gaza Health Ministry reported that deaths since the “ceasefire” rose from 1,422 on September 29 to 1,460 by October 5. In the West Bank, Mashhour Yassin, 51, was shot dead on October 1 as settlers stormed homes in Yasouf, and Bahaa al-Natsheh, 19, was killed the next day near an illegal outpost outside Kobar. A 45-year-old Palestinian man died of cardiac arrest while detained at a checkpoint east of Tulkarem, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

Upcoming Developments

Israel’s political landscape will be tested in the October 27 election, while the Israeli government has set a deadline of October 8 for the United Kingdom to close its consulate in occupied East Jerusalem.
