History

Historical Context

Operation Cast Lead began on 27 December 2008 when the Israel Defense Forces launched a three-week assault on Hamas in Gaza, killing roughly 1,400 Palestinians and drawing a Goldstone UN inquiry. The precedent of UN investigations and U.S. diplomatic pressure shaped the response to the 3 October 2026 airstrike that killed senior Hamas operative Ali al-Amoudi and five civilians, reviving calls for accountability.
