History

Historical Context

Amazon launched its first Prime Day on July 15 2015 to mark the site’s 20th anniversary, promising more deals than Black Friday. The two-day sale spurred Walmart to promote competing discounts and created a pattern of annual flash-sale events, later expanded to October’s Prime Big Deal Days. In 2016, Prime Day generated 60 % more orders worldwide than the prior year.
