Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan Activate Mecca Defence Pact Amid Houthi Attacks
By Drooid · · How we work
Background and Formation of the Mecca Defence Alliance
The Mecca Defence Alliance was signed on August 7, 2026 by Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan. The pact obliges each member to regard an armed attack on any one of them as an attack on all, mirroring Article 5 of NATO. It was first invoked on the day it was signed when the Iran-aligned Houthi movement began a large-scale offensive in Yemen.
Activation of Collective Deterrence (5 October 2026)
On 5 October 2026, defence and foreign ministers from the three states held an extraordinary meeting of the Strategic Policy and Defence Committee in Riyadh, marking the alliance’s first operational use.
Military Capabilities of the Alliance
According to the 2026 Global Firepower Index, the three members together field roughly 1.4 million active personnel, 3,400 aircraft, 6,000 tanks and more than 340 naval assets. Pakistan maintains about 8,000 troops on Saudi soil, along with JF-17 fighters, combat drones and a surface-to-air missile battery.
Criticism & Opposition
The Houthi movement warned: “By God, if Turkey and Pakistan become involved, we will strike them with an iron fist,” said Mohammed al, a senior Houthi council member.
On-the-Ground Developments in Yemen
Yemeni forces backed by Saudi Arabia recaptured the Red Sea port of Mocha and seized the Bab al-Mandeb strait. The Saudi-led coalition deployed 100 fighter jets for air support. The Houthis claimed attacks on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport and the Aramco refinery at Rabigh, but Saudi authorities have not confirmed those claims.
Conflicting Reports & Gaps
Sources differ on the verification of Houthi claims regarding attacks on Saudi infrastructure. While the Houthis announced strikes on the airport and refinery, Saudi officials have offered no confirmation, leaving damage and casualty figures unverified.
What Comes Next
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar said Riyadh will host an emergency meeting of the Defence and Strategic Political Committee to discuss the Houthi attacks and a possible political engagement proposal. The exact date has not been set but is expected in the coming weeks.
