History

Historical Context

The 1955 Baghdad Pact, a Cold-War defense treaty uniting Pakistan, Turkey, Iran, the United Kingdom and the United States, sought to contain Soviet expansion. The pact initially comprised five member nations and allocated roughly $1 billion in joint military aid during its first decade overall. Today, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey revived that collaborative spirit through the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, pledging troop deployments to protect the holy city. If the alliance mirrors the 1955 pact’s mixed results, regional security may hinge on coordinated forces but could also entangle members in broader geopolitical rivalries.
