History

Historical Context

The 2026 Gosport protest in Hampshire invoked protest-control legislation, echoing a wave of tougher public order measures that followed the 2015 European migrant crisis. That year, Germany received over 1 million asylum seekers, prompting leaders such as Chancellor Angela Merkel to tighten security laws across the EU. The legacy of those steps shapes today’s face-cover ban debate.
