History

Historical Context

Steve Bell’s 1995 victory against The Guardian, winning £30,000 under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act, affirmed artists’ rights and spurred firms like Brabners to counsel parties on image-rights. The Conservative Party’s recent use of Stanley Chow’s Andy Burnham cartoon echoes that precedent, risking up to £250,000 in damages if courts follow Bell’s case.
