History

Historical Context

The May 1968 uprising, sparked by student protests at Nanterre and the Sorbonne, escalated into a general strike that halted up to two-thirds of France’s workforce—about 10 million workers—and forced President Charles de Gaulle to negotiate the Grenelle agreements. The legacy of those education reforms underpins today’s 2027 school blockades, where Minister Edouard Geffray and the CGT union face thousands of arrests.
