Google Gemini Free Users Shift to Flash Lite Model
By Drooid · · How we work
Core Change to the Free Tier
Effective October 9 (scheduled), Google will restrict the Gemini free plan to the Flash Lite model. Previously, free users could select among Gemini Flash Lite, Flash, and Pro. After the change, only Flash Lite will remain available without payment.
Subscription Tier Adjustments
Google’s AI Plus subscription, priced at $4.99 per month, will continue to grant access to the standard Flash model but will soon lose the Gemini Pro option. Access to the top-tier Gemini Pro model and the “Deep Think” advanced-reasoning feature will be limited to the Google AI Pro ($19.99 per month) and Ultra ($99.99 per month) subscriptions.
Official Position from Google
Google states that AI Plus subscribers will receive an email notification when Pro access is removed. The company also notes that users can still choose low, medium, or high effort levels for each model, but higher effort levels may deplete a user’s Gemini usage limit more quickly.
Impact on Users
The restriction means free-plan users lose the ability to run higher-performance models, potentially prompting some to upgrade to AI Plus or higher tiers. Because higher effort settings consume usage limits faster, free users may experience reduced functionality or be compelled to manage their usage more carefully.
Data Summary
- Free plan (post-Oct 9): Flash Lite only.
- AI Plus: $4.99 /month, provides Flash but will lose Pro.
- AI Pro: $19.99 /month, includes Flash Pro and Deep Think.
- AI Ultra: $99.99 /month, includes all top-tier features.
These adjustments reshape Google’s Gemini access hierarchy, concentrating advanced capabilities behind paid subscriptions while limiting free users to the most basic model.
