Fitbit Edge: Google’s New High-End Fitness Tracker Detailed
By Drooid · · How we work
Core Features and Launch Outlook
Google’s Fitbit division has disclosed the upcoming Fitbit Edge, a premium fitness tracker that will run Fitbit OS and provide access to Google Play. The device is slated to arrive in four color palettes mirroring the Pixel Watch 5 lineup, including obsidian, olive, canyon, and fog finishes. While no exact release date has been given, the tracker is positioned for launch in the near term.
Technical Specs
The Edge sports a 1.34-inch always-on OLED touchscreen protected by an IP68 water-resistance rating. Connectivity includes Bluetooth pairing with both Android and iOS devices. Sensors comprise an accelerometer, barometer, altimeter, gyroscope, multiple optical heart-rate and SpO2 detectors, and electrical leads for ECG recordings. Battery life is rated up to seven days under normal use, dropping to roughly two days when the always-on display is active.
Health and Activity Tracking
Fitbit OS on the Edge will monitor standard metrics such as steps, distance, calories, skin temperature, sleep, cardiac load, and menstrual cycles. It also supports activity-specific tracking for running, swimming, golf, and more than 40 other exercises, delivering real-time coaching and personalized programs powered by Google Gemini. The device can detect atrial fibrillation and other irregular heart rhythms, issuing alerts when such conditions are identified.
Market Position and Expectations
By combining a high-end display, extensive sensor suite, and integration with Google’s AI-driven coaching, the Edge aims to compete with flagship smartwatches while retaining a slimmer, band-only form factor. Analysts note that the seven-day battery claim aligns with premium competitors, though the reduced two-day endurance with the always-on screen may influence user preferences. The inclusion of Google Play suggests a broader app ecosystem than previous Fitbit models, potentially expanding its appeal to both fitness enthusiasts and general smartwatch users.
