Funding Allocation and Partner Organizations
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a $30 million initiative aimed at reducing antisemitic hate in the five boroughs. The plan provides a $6.4 million cash infusion to Partners Against the Hate (P.A.T.H.), effectively doubling the grant program’s previous year’s funding. P.A.T.H. coordinates with six grassroots groups, including the Jewish Community Relations Council, the 67th Precinct Clergy Council (“the Godsquad”), the LGBT NYC Anti-Violence Project, the Asian American Federation, the Hispanic Federation, and the Arab American Association of New York. The Arab American Association, described as an anti-Israel organization and formerly run by activist Linda Sarsour, has received $3.3 million in city funding between 2017 and 2024, according to the Washington Examiner’s citation of OpenTheBooks data.
Reported Rise in Antisemitic Incidents
City crime statistics show an upward trend in hate crimes targeting Jews. NYPD data, presented by analyst James Keivom, recorded an 8 % increase in antisemitic attacks through August, with anti-Jewish incidents comprising the majority of reported hate crimes.
Political Context and Prior Associations
Mamdani has faced pressure to address the surge in antisemitic activity since taking office. Prior to his mayoral tenure, he campaigned alongside Linda Sarsour, who supported the then-little-known Queens assembly candidate and later advocated for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—a stance outside the mayor’s formal authority.
Official Response and Program Goals
The mayor’s office framed the initiative as a comprehensive effort to prevent hate through community programs and grants, noting that the plan does not reference Zionism. By directing resources to a broad coalition of religious and ethnic groups, the administration aims to strengthen inter-community relations and curb the recent rise in antisemitic offenses.
