History

Historical Context

Since Glen Bell opened the first Taco Bell in 1962, the chain—now a Yum! Brands subsidiary operating 8,212 locations—has relied on limited-time collaborations. PepsiCo’s Doritos Locos Taco debuted March 8 2012, boosting sales and loyalty sign-ups, a model echoed in 2026 giveaways by Taco Bell, Moe’s, Del Taco and Chuy’s to spur foot traffic amid fierce fast-food competition.
