NATO Exercise Strike Warrior 2026 Highlights New Era of UK-Led Commando Operations

Scope and Activities
More than 2,000 personnel from six NATO nations are participating in the UK-led Exercise Strike Warrior 2026. The drill spans the Western Isles, Cape Wrath, the North-West Approaches, Galloway, the Borders and the North Sea. Eight warships and 19 aircraft support a range of tasks, including amphibious assaults, boarding operations, intelligence-surveillance missions, logistics, maritime security and anti-submarine warfare. Uncrewed aircraft conduct reconnaissance, simulated strikes and supply drops, while medical teams practice protected underground treatment facilities for dispersed forces.
Integration of Royal Marines with NATO Naval Assets
Royal Marine units remain central to the exercise but increasingly rely on NATO partners for shipping. 148 Battery of 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, an Army unit specialising in Naval Gunfire Support Forward Observation, directed live naval gunfire from the Dutch frigate HNLMS Van Amstel (armed with an Oto Melara 76 mm gun) and the Canadian frigate HMCS St. John’s (equipped with a 57 mm mount). The battery reports that this level of coordination had not been achieved for nearly 30 years.
A notable serial saw commandos from 148 Battery embark aboard the German Type 212A submarine U36, surface off north-western Scotland, and deploy in inflatable raiding craft to establish concealed observation posts. From these positions the teams called fire from U36 and the Portuguese frigate NRP D. Francisco de Almeida, demonstrating a demanding combination of submarine insertion, covert movement ashore and joint fire control.
Operational Innovations and Challenges
The exercise marks the first time in roughly 15 years that virtually all elements of the UK Commando Force have operated together at this scale, reflecting a shift toward smaller, dispersed units that gather intelligence and act as targeting nodes for distant firepower. Navylookout notes that the future of naval gunfire support may be doubtful as warships loitering close to shore become increasingly vulnerable to drone attacks and inexpensive anti-ship missiles.
Implications for Future Commando Operations
Strike Warrior provides a snapshot of the Commando Force’s evolving doctrine: dispersed teams operating across extensive coastlines, integrating with allied submarines, warships and command systems, and relying on NATO firepower rather than large British amphibious ships. The drill underscores the importance of interoperability with partner navies and highlights emerging risks that could shape the force’s employment in the High North and North Atlantic.
