History

Historical Context

After Dale Earnhardt’s fatal crash on February 18 2001 in the 43rd Daytona 500, NASCAR introduced safety mandates such as the HANS device (October 2001) and began honoring drivers with silent laps and three-finger gestures. The Dale Earnhardt Foundation was created in 2002, and tracks such as Daytona International Speedway now incorporate driver-tribute ceremonies that continue this model.
