History

Historical Context

In May 1998 border clashes at Badme sparked the Eritrea-Ethiopia war, which escalated into full-scale fighting and claimed about 70,000 lives before the Algiers Agreement ended hostilities in December 2000. The 2026 federal offensive that recaptured Mekelle and expelled the Tigray Peace Force echoes that earlier territorial struggle, prompting the African Union’s 2022 call for inclusive dialogue and a U.S. warning against another humanitarian disaster.
