Google Expands Pixel Buds Pro Lineup with Major Firmware Upgrade and New Pro 2 Model

By Drooid · · How we work

Expanded Firmware Features Across the Buds Family

Google’s latest firmware rollout, released after the August preview of new capabilities, adds Dynamic Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) to the Pixel Buds Pro 2. The update automatically adjusts audio and ANC based on the ear seal, compensating for subtle shifts as the earbuds move. The same firmware also introduces “Tap to Mute” for phone calls, auto-pause of media when the user falls asleep via Pixel Watch sleep sensing, and an enhanced Live Translate function that lets users start instant translation with a single touch, leveraging the Google Translate app. These features are now available on the Pixel Buds Pro (2022), Pro 2 (2024), and Buds 2a (2025).

Hardware Specs and Battery Life

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 house Google’s Tensor A1 processor, enabling real-time noise cancellation and audio processing. With ANC active, the earbuds deliver up to eight hours of playback, extending to 30 hours when paired with the charging case; without ANC, playback reaches 12 hours on the buds and 48 hours with the case. The case supports both Qi wireless charging and USB-C wired charging. An IP54 rating protects the earbuds from dust and water, while the case carries an IPX4 rating.

AI-Driven Voice Interaction

Google’s Gemini AI platform powers hands-free voice commands across the Pixel ecosystem. Users can ask questions, request directions, or control playback without touching their phone. Conversation Detection automatically pauses music and switches to Transparency mode when the user begins speaking, then resumes playback after the conversation ends. Clear Calling uses an internal microphone and a voice accelerometer that captures jaw vibrations for clearer voice transmission.

Fit, Comfort, and Find-My-Device Integration

The earbuds feature a “Silent Seal 2.0” ANC system that continuously monitors ambient noise and ear shape, adapting to environments ranging from quiet offices to noisy trains. A twist-to-adjust stabilizer and four ear-tip sizes help secure a snug fit for activities like running or workouts. The charging case includes a built-in speaker that works with Google’s Find My Device app, allowing users to locate a misplaced case.

Market Position and Pricing

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are positioned as Google’s flagship wireless earbuds, optimized for Pixel and Android smartphones. They are offered on Amazon at $179, a $50 (22 %) discount from the regular $229 price. Available colors include Porcelain, Hazel, Wintergreen, and Peony.
