History

Historical Context

Scotland’s pattern of early World Cup exits dates back to its first finals in 1954 and includes nine appearances, never advancing past the group stage—most recently a 2-1 loss to Brazil in 1998 that left them with a single goal. The same struggle resurfaced in the Nations League, where Andy Robertson earned his 100th cap as Scotland fell 2-1 to Slovenia, prompting renewed calls for reform.
