The Blaze and Immediate Response
In the early hours of Tuesday, a fire broke out on Market Place in Kingston upon Thames. Four fire engines and roughly 25 firefighters were dispatched after the first of six emergency calls arrived at 04:33 BST. The blaze consumed a number of market stalls, damaged the fascia of several adjoining properties and a small portion of a neighbouring roof, and was fully extinguished by 06:08. Eight people were evacuated; no injuries have been reported. The cause remains unknown and is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police and the London Fire Brigade.
Background and Planned Revamp
Kingston’s Ancient Market is described by local officials as “the heart of the community.” In January, the operator Between the Bridges submitted proposals to Kingston Council to replace the destroyed stalls with a central piazza, restaurant, bar and roof terrace. The council has not yet ruled on the plans.
Official Statements & Responses
Council leader Andreas Kirsch said he was “shocked and saddened” by the fire and expressed sympathy for traders, business owners and residents. The London Fire Brigade confirmed the extent of the damage and noted that the Market Place remains cordoned off, preventing businesses within the area from trading until further notice.

Next Steps for the Market
Kingston Council announced that it is working with partners to support those affected and to facilitate the market’s recovery. Until the investigation concludes and a decision on the revamp proposals is made, the cordoned-off zone will stay closed, limiting trade for local merchants.
