Commemorations Across Israel
On Wednesday, Israelis observed a moment of silence at 6:29 a.m. (4:29 a.m. Irish time) at the Nova music-festival site, where Hamas militants opened fire at dawn on Oct 7, 2023. Families bowed before portraits of the 348 victims killed at the festival, while similar gatherings occurred at road junctions, bomb shelters and the Kfar Aza kibbutz. The official state ceremony was held on Oct 5, 2023, in accordance with the Hebrew calendar. The day also marked the first anniversary on which all former hostages have returned home, following the release of the last captive in January 2026.
Casualties and Human Toll
A UN inquiry confirmed that the Oct 7 attacks killed 1,200 people and resulted in 252 hostages being taken to Gaza. Hamas-run health authorities estimate that Israel’s subsequent bombardment and ground operations have killed more than 74,000 Palestinians in Gaza. Since the Oct 10, 2025, US-brokered ceasefire, Gaza health authorities report over 1,400 Palestinian deaths, while the Israeli military says five Israeli soldiers have been killed in recent combat. In Gaza, the civil defence identified one of the recent fatalities as a volunteer for its emergency rescue service.
Political Landscape and Election Stakes
The commemorations occur 20 days before Israel’s first parliamentary election since the attacks, widely viewed as a referendum on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s long tenure. Netanyahu has declined an independent investigation, opting instead to publish redacted government documents and describing the attacks as a “serious intelligence failure.” A poll by the Israel Democracy Institute found that 68 percent of Jewish Israelis consider the Oct 7 events a central factor in their voting decision. More than 200 former hostages and relatives have written to Netanyahu demanding an inquiry or his resignation.
Ceasefire Status and Ongoing Violence
The 2025 ceasefire, which halted major fighting, left Israel controlling roughly 53 percent of Gaza, with Hamas retaining the remaining third where about 2 million residents live in makeshift shelters. Negotiations remain stalled; Israel insists on full Hamas disarmament before troop withdrawals, while Hamas cites continued Israeli strikes as a condition for any phased disarmament. U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” has proposed reconstruction plans that, according to critics, overlook Palestinian property rights and have not secured agreement from either side.
Public Sentiment and Calls for Accountability
The moment of silence was accompanied by distant explosions in Gaza, underscoring the persistence of hostilities despite the ceasefire. The anniversary thus blends personal mourning with heightened political tension as Israel approaches a pivotal election and ongoing negotiations over Gaza’s future.
