PQ Proposes Tax Cuts

Polls show very low support for independence among the Quebec francophone electorate.
The Parti Québécois’ first-100-day agenda proposes tax cuts.

After a 39-day campaign, St-Pierre Plamondon said he felt increasingly confident voters would back the broader platform.

History

Historical Context

In 1995, the Parti Québécois, led by Jacques Parizeau, held a province-wide sovereignty referendum that narrowly failed, with 49.42 % voting yes. The referendum cost the Quebec government roughly C$1.5 billion, while the federal Liberal Party under Jean Chrétien pledged to block any future secession attempts. Today's PQ minority win mirrors that 1995 surge, as leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon again promises a referendum after Donald Trump leaves office in 2029. The 1995 outcome warns that repeated sovereignty bids risk deepening linguistic divides and could trigger costly constitutional negotiations for Canada’s federal system.
