History

Historical Context

In 1970 the National League owners adopted a three-day postseason paternity list, a roster exemption written into that year’s collective bargaining agreement. The rule lets clubs replace a pitcher for up to three games, a provision the San Diego Padres invoked in the 2024 NLDS when they placed Mason Miller on the list and swapped Walker Buehler for right-hander Randy Vasquez.
