Hidden Iran War Costs

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said troops may be moved from Europe to Western Hemisphere as Pentagon expands anti-cartel campaign in South America.
Critics, including Senator Chris Murphy, allege Hegseth is using redeployment to conceal war’s financial and human costs from Congress and the public.

History

Historical Context

In December 1989 President George H. W. Bush launched Operation Just Cause, sending 27,684 U.S. troops to depose General Manuel Noriega and install president-elect Guillermo Endara. The anti-drug, democracy-focused invasion created a precedent for major force moves in the Western Hemisphere. In 2025 Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced shifting troops from Europe to the Americas, reviving those cost and political concerns.
