History

Historical Context

President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Uniform Time Act on April 14, 1966, establishing a federal schedule for daylight-saving time. The law was later amended, notably by the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which moved the start to the second Sunday in March. Today, the Senate’s 2022 Sunshine Protection Act and the House’s 2026 version echo that 1966 precedent by seeking permanent DST.
