History

Historical Context

In March 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, triggering the first large-scale armed confrontation between Russian forces and Ukraine in Eastern Europe. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence reported that by December 2014, Russian-backed separatists had seized 2,000 square kilometres of Donbas, displacing over 1.5 million civilians. The October 7 2026 missile and drone barrage that killed at least 12 civilians in Pryluky mirrors the 2014 pattern of indiscriminate strikes on populated areas. The United Nations and NATO now urge Moscow to cease strikes, warning that further breaches could invite sanctions surpassing the $5 billion imposed after Crimea.
