Historical Context

In February-March 2014, Russian forces seized Crimea, held a disputed referendum and formally annexed the peninsula on 18 March 2014, sparking Western sanctions and NATO’s eastern reinforcement. The annexation launched the Russo-Ukrainian war, and in October 2026 Russia launched a barrage of 70 missiles and drones that overwhelmed Ukraine’s limited Patriot air-defence, prompting fresh appeals for expanded NATO support.
