History

Historical Context

The 1995 Hebron massacre, when settler Baruch Goldstein killed 29 Palestinians and wounded over 100, sparked condemnation. Israel Defense Forces and the Palestinian Authority reported the attack destroyed 15 homes and triggered a $2 million compensation fund. On Oct 7, 2026, Israeli settlers raided harvesters near Burqa, killing Ali Hassan Yusor al-Bazzari and wounding 16, while UN OCHA logged over 1,100 injuries that year. The Hebron tragedy’s legacy of stricter security and legal scrutiny now fuels Human Rights Watch and Israeli court calls for probes of today’s settler violence.
