Amazon’s new price-history tool displays past prices for select items to help shoppers assess deals.
Best Buy, Walmart and Target typically run parallel promotions during the two-day event.
The sale covers over 35 categories, offering at least 20 % off and four-star ratings.
Experts advise shoppers to list desired items and set price targets to avoid impulse purchases.

History

Historical Context

Black Friday, first coined by Philadelphia police in 1952, evolved into a nationwide sales phenomenon that reshaped retail discounting strategies. By 2015, Amazon launched its inaugural Prime Day, generating $7 billion in sales and prompting competitors like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy to match 20 % discounts. The 2026 Prime Day price cuts on Apple Watch Series 12 to $350 and SE 3 to $199 echo Black Friday’s tradition of deep markdowns to drive volume. Such aggressive discounting reinforces price-history tools and free-trial memberships, cementing data-driven shopping habits that trace back to mid-20th-century promotional tactics.
