History

Historical Context

During the 1995-96 Taiwan Strait crisis, the PLA launched missile drills from July 1995 through March 1996, mobilizing up to 150,000 troops and closing the strait to commercial traffic. The U.S. deployed carriers like USS Nimitz, and the crisis helped Lee Teng-hui win the March 23, 1996 presidential election and spur later U.S. arms sales. President Trump’s $14 billion weapons request and semiconductor pact echo that precedent.
