Diesel Price Revelation

Leaked audio released by Axios captured Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton saying the Iran war and gas and diesel prices were hurting his Senate campaign.

History

Historical Context

The 1973 Arab oil embargo, triggered by Middle-East tensions, caused U.S. gasoline prices to quadruple and reshaped the November presidential race. President Richard Nixon’s administration reported a 36 % rise in fuel costs, while OPEC’s output fell by 5 million barrels per day. Today's leaked Ken Paxton audio echoes 1973, as the Texas attorney general blames Iran-related war and diesel over $6 per gallon for his campaign slump. The parallel suggests fuel-price anxieties can still sway voter sentiment, prompting candidates to adjust messaging ahead of the 2024 Senate primary.
