History

Historical Context

In March 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, deploying roughly 20,000 troops and prompting Western sanctions that froze about $1.5 billion in assets. The United Nations condemned the move, while NATO recorded a 30 % increase in Eastern-flank deployments through 2015. Today, Russia’s launch of 70 missiles and dozens of drones against Ukrainian cities mirrors the 2014 strategy of overwhelming firepower to pressure Kyiv. The pattern suggests prolonged conflict, prompting the European Union to consider additional €10 billion aid packages and reinforcing NATO’s eastern deterrence posture.
