History

Historical Context

In August 1968 the Democratic National Convention in Chicago erupted when Mayor Richard J. Daley ordered 5,000 National Guard troops to confront roughly 10,000 anti-Vietnam demonstrators, resulting in a police riot that left about 100 protesters and 119 officers injured and 600 arrests. The televised clash, dubbed the “Battle of Michigan Avenue,” exposed deep racial and political divisions that still echo in polarized online debates.
