Historical Context

In May 1943 President Franklin D. Roosevelt opened the 5-acre Camp David (then Shangri-La) as a retreat. Eisenhower renamed it in 1953 after his grandson and added a one-mile security perimeter, creating a template for sites used for diplomacy from Churchill to the 1978 Camp David Accords. The 2026 plan to convert Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach into a retreat follows that tradition.
