History

Historical Context

In June 1964 three civil-rights workers—James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner—were murdered in Neshoba County, prompting Attorney General Robert Kennedy to dispatch 150 FBI agents and sparking the “Mississippi Burning” investigation that helped drive the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Today, calls by Donald Trump, Maxine Waters and Frederica Wilson echo the 1964 demand for oversight of racially motivated killings.
