History

Historical Context

In August 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, killing over 1,800 and causing $125 billion in damage, making it one of the two costliest U.S. storms (the other being 2017’s Harvey). The 2005 season set a record with 15 hurricanes, including seven major ones, and studies link rising damage to climate-driven warming and expanding coastal populations.
