AI-Altered Image Used in White House Promotion
In July 2026 the White House shared a picture on its X, Facebook and Instagram accounts that appeared to show an airplane cabin full of passengers watching the president’s new streaming service, “Trump TV.” The post claimed the image illustrated “what everybody is watching” and linked to the channel’s schedule for a “huge week” of administration events.
Background: Trump TV and the Administration’s Media Conflict
“Trump TV,” a 24-hour YouTube stream launched in September 2025, features footage of former President Donald Trump and other White House events. Its debut came amid a public dispute with several major news outlets after Trump barred CNN, Politico and MS Now from White House coverage. The promotion of the service coincided with Trump’s recent public remarks about artificial-intelligence technology.
Fact-Checking Findings
Digital analysts used OpenAI’s image-verification tools and identified a SynthID watermark in the White House-shared picture, indicating AI generation or modification. A reverse-image search traced the original photograph to a personal social-media post from February 2023, which showed passengers watching the NFL’s Super Bowl LVII during a flight; one passenger was seen viewing the 2005 romantic comedy *Hitch*. The AI-altered version retained the original cabin scene but replaced the on-screen content with a mock-up of “Trump TV,” creating the impression that the entire flight audience was tuned to the channel.
Official Response and Lack of Disclosure
The White House’s accompanying caption framed the image as evidence of widespread viewership of the new channel but did not disclose that the picture had been sourced from a 2023 post or altered with AI tools. No correction or clarification was issued after the fact-checking report highlighted the manipulation.
