History

Historical Context

Commissioner Bowie Kuhn introduced MLB’s seven-day paternity list in 1976, letting teams such as the San Diego Padres and Oakland Athletics temporarily replace new fathers without penalty. The rule, capped at seven days per birth, remains active; Mason Miller’s activation for Game 4 and J.J. De Vries’ roster moves illustrate how the policy still shapes postseason roster strategy.
