How to Keep Your Smartphone’s Security Updates Current

By Drooid · · How we work

Overview of Update Mechanisms

Apple, Google and Samsung each provide separate pathways for delivering security fixes between major operating-system releases. Apple’s “Background Security Improvements” can automatically install lightweight patches for components such as Safari and WebKit. Google relies on two streams: regular Android version updates (currently Android 17 for supported Pixel phones) and Google Play system updates that patch underlying services. Samsung’s One UI 9 sits atop Android and is rolled out by device, carrier and region, with an additional Google Play system update required for full protection.

Verifying Your Phone’s Update Status

iPhone – Open Settings -> General -> Software Update to confirm iOS 27 is installed, then Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Background Security Improvements and enable “Automatically Install.”

Pixel – Open Settings -> System -> Software Update to check for the September 2026 rollout, then Settings -> About phone -> Android version and Settings -> About phone -> Google Play system update to install any pending patches.

Galaxy – Open Settings -> Software update (or “Download and install,” “System updates,” etc., depending on the model) to check for One UI 9, then Settings -> About phone -> Software information and Settings -> About phone -> Google Play system update for the Google layer.

Manufacturer Support Timelines

Apple continues iPhone software and security updates for several years, but older models eventually cease receiving new iOS releases. Google provides seven years of operating-system and security updates for Pixel 8 and newer devices, measured from U.S. market launch. Samsung offers extended software support for many newer Galaxy models, though the exact duration varies by device. When a phone no longer receives updates, newly discovered vulnerabilities may remain unpatched, increasing exposure to attacks.

Additional Protection Measures

Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson advises pairing up-to-date software with a strong passcode, biometric authentication and built-in theft-protection features. He also recommends using a password manager for unique credentials and installing reputable antivirus software to detect malicious links and downloads.

What Readers Should Do Next

Regularly review each of the update screens described above and complete any pending installations, including required restarts, to ensure that the latest security protections are active on your device.
