History

Historical Context

In July 1991, a balance-of-payments crisis left India with only three weeks of imports, leading Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and Finance Minister Manmohan Singh to devalue the rupee and begin liberalisation. The reforms ended most of the Licence Raj, opened FDI and cut tariffs, raising foreign investment from $132 million (1991-92) to $5.3 billion (1995-96). That foundation fuels today’s “Viksit Bharat 2047” agenda to expand manufacturing and ties.
