History

Historical Context

The 1991 balance-of-payments crisis forced Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao and Finance Minister Manmohan Singh to launch sweeping liberalisation—devaluing the rupee, dismantling the Licence Raj and raising foreign investment from $132 million to $5.3 billion by 1995-96. That market-open agenda underpins Narendra Modi’s 25-year premiership, celebrated on 7 October 2026, suggesting policy continuity for investors.
