France Validates New M51.3 SLBM with First Submarine Launch from Le Vigilant

First Submarine Launch of the M51.3

On October 6 2026 the French Navy’s ballistic-missile submarine Le Vigilant carried out an acceptance firing of an unarmed M51.3 SLBM under Operation SMERTIOS. The test, tracked by the Direction générale de l'armement (DGA) missile-test centre and the instrumentation ship Monge, flew across the North Atlantic and impacted a designated area several hundred kilometres from any coastline, confirming the submarine’s ability to employ the upgraded missile after its mid-life refit.

Background and Context

The M51.3, the third iteration of France’s sea-based strategic missile developed by ArianeGroup since 2014, carries the TNO-2 nuclear warhead (not loaded for the test) and is reported to improve range, accuracy and penetration of missile-defence systems. Independent estimates place its range above 5,900 miles (?9,500 km).

Le Vigilant underwent a three-year Indisponibilité Périodique pour Entretien et Réparation (IPER) overhaul that began in fall 2023 at Île Longue. After 18 months in dry dock at Brest, the submarine returned to Île Longue on July 18 2025 for final work, involving roughly four million hours of labour and about 700 major modification orders coordinated by Naval Group, the fleet support service (SSF) and the DGA.

A previous post-overhaul launch in 2013 ended in a self-destruct, the only publicly reported M51 failure. The most recent land-based qualification of the M51.3 occurred at Biscarrosse on November 18 2023, after which the missile entered operational service on October 24 2025.

Timeline of Key Milestones

  • May 5 2013 – First M51 launch from Le Vigilant self-destructs.
  • November 18 2023 – Land-based qualification flight of the M51.3.
  • July 18 2025 – Le Vigilant returns to Île Longue for final overhaul phase.
  • October 24 2025 – M51.3 enters operational service.
  • October 6 2026 – First submarine launch of the M51.3 from Le Vigilant.

Technical Data and Capabilities

  • Missile mass: > 50 tonnes (? 54 tonnes for the family).
  • Propulsion: three solid-propellant stages, gas-ejection launch from a submerged platform.
  • Range: independent estimates > 5,900 miles; official figure undisclosed.
  • Warhead: designed for the TNO-2 nuclear warhead; each submarine carries 16 missiles, and the French fleet operates four Triomphant-class SSBNs.

Official Statements & Responses

President Emmanuel Macron, aboard the FREMM-class frigate Auvergne, said the test demonstrated the credibility and continuity of France’s nuclear deterrence and underscored the nation’s long-term capability to protect its citizens.

Verbatim Quote

  • “Very few nations possess such expertise. Our nuclear deterrence protects us and will continue to protect us,” — President Emmanuel Macron

What’s Next

The DGA awarded ArianeGroup the M51.4 contract on August 28 2025; the next variant is slated to enter service in the 2030s aboard both existing Triomphant-class boats and forthcoming third-generation SSBNs. President Macron announced on March 2 2026 that the first of the new submarines will be named L’Invincible, part of the SNLE 3G programme scheduled for launch in the mid-2030s. The French defence budget is projected to double over the next ten years, supporting continued upgrades to sea- and air-based components of the nuclear deterrent.
