History

Historical Context

In Game 1 of the 1996 ALCS, 12-year-old Jeffrey Maier reached over the right-field wall and turned Derek Jeter’s fly ball into a home run, a call that helped the New York Yankees tie the game and eventually win the series 4–1. The incident spurred stricter fan-interference rules and today’s Tampa Bay Rays ALDS sweep was decided by a replay-reviewed interference call, echoing that precedent.
