History

Historical Context

In October 1973 Egypt and Syria surprised Israel with a Yom Kippur attack across the Sinai and Golan Heights, killing about 1,400 Israelis and prompting extensive U.S. military resupply. The war’s shock led to the 1978 Camp David Accords and Egypt’s peace treaty. The October 7 2023 Hamas assault, killing over 1,200, re-ignites those traumas and fuels disputes led by Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
