History

Historical Context

When Delhi’s centrally funded metro opened its first elevated section in December 2002 and grew to a 10-line, 271-station network that cuts 630,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, the DMRC showed joint-state financing could deliver large-scale rail. Building on that model, Andhra Pradesh chief minister met Prime Minister Modi and Finance Minister Sitharaman in 2024 to obtain central aid for the Visakhapatnam Metro and El Niño drought relief.
