History

Historical Context

When Apple unveiled the first Intel-based MacBook Pro in 2006, it set a new performance benchmark for premium laptops. The 15-inch model cost $2,199, featured a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, and sold over 1 million units in its first year. Microsoft’s 2026 Surface Laptop Ultra mirrors that strategy, offering a $2,599 RTX Spark chip with 20-core Grace CPU, 6,144-core Blackwell GPU, and a 2,000-nit display. By pairing Nvidia partnership and on-device AI containers, Microsoft aims to redefine high-end computing, echoing Apple’s market-shaping impact a decade earlier.
