History

Historical Context

In 1999, NATO launched a 78-day air campaign against Yugoslavia, striking Belgrade and causing civilian casualties that resulted in over 1,000 deaths. The United States deployed Patriot missile batteries, which intercepted roughly 30 % of incoming Serbian rockets, totaling 300 engagements during the campaign. Today Ukraine endures Russian missile strikes on Pryluky while requesting Patriot interceptors, as India offers a three-point cease-fire plan and Black Sea insurance premiums surge. The 1999 precedent demonstrates that intensive air operations combined with diplomatic initiatives can trigger sanctions, reshape regional security, and drive post-conflict reconstruction.
