Core Event
The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court found Knesset member Ofer Cassif guilty of aggravated assault on a police officer during a protest in the South Hebron Hills. The court ruled that Cassif deliberately drove his car into the path of Border Police Chief Inspector Dor Amitai and officer Yitzhak Azulay, striking Azulay’s left leg, and later struck the officer’s head with his right hand. The conviction was handed down on a Thursday; the offense carries a statutory penalty of three months to five years in prison.
Background to the May 2022 Protest
On May 13, 2022, protests erupted in Masafer Yatta after the Israeli Supreme Court issued a ruling concerning the villages there. Authorities declared the area around the Route 317 junction and the dirt roads leading to Yatta a closed military zone, prohibiting Israeli citizens from entering Area A, which is under Palestinian Authority control. Cassif arrived by car to join the demonstrators, was stopped by security personnel, and was allowed to proceed only on foot. He later returned to his vehicle, leading to the confrontation with the officers.
Court Findings and Legal Reasoning
Judge Elazar Bialin concluded that Cassif acted “forcefully and crudely” toward the security forces, intentionally obstructing Azulay in the performance of his duties. The court rejected Cassif’s claim that parliamentary immunity permitted him to drive through the restricted zone and dismissed his allegation of selective enforcement. The judgment affirmed that immunity extends only to movement on foot within a protest area and does not shield a lawmaker from endangering officers or obstructing police work.
Political Reactions
Both statements reflect the polarized political context surrounding the case.
