BND President Martin Jaeger announced an extensive internal investigation after the espionage suspicions surfaced.

History

Historical Context

In 1956 Soviet forces exposed the CIA-MI6 Operation Gold tunnel under East Berlin, revealing a breach that later, in 1961, forced Western agencies to admit the espionage failure. The 2025 arrest of BND chief August Hanning and seizure of 2,000 classified files echo that breach, prompting Germany to tighten intelligence oversight and NATO to review shared surveillance trust.
