History

Historical Context

Stephen Lawrence’s racially motivated murder on 22 April 1993 sparked a national outcry that prompted Home Secretary Jack Straw to order the Macpherson inquiry in 1997; its 1999 report labelled the Metropolitan Police institutionally racist and led to the 2005 repeal of double jeopardy, allowing the 2012 convictions of Gary Dobson and David Norris. The legacy informs calls for transparency in the 2024 Prestatyn van-fire homicide.
