Pittsburgh Airport’s Stress Ranking
USA TODAY reported that Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) placed 16th out of 55 major U.S. airports in a stress-ranking compiled by Rightway Parking. The ranking, which groups airports into thirds, positions PIT between Orlando International Airport (No. 15) and St. Louis Lambert International Airport (No. 17). While the airport did not break into the top-10 most stressful sites, its placement in the upper third signals notable traveler frustration.
Study Methodology and Comparative Data
The analysis drew on Bureau of Transportation Statistics flight-delay and cancellation figures from 2025, as well as delay-rate trends spanning 2021-2025. Rightway Parking also incorporated Google Maps data on driving distance and time from each airport to its corresponding city center. For context, the study highlighted that the most stressful airports—such as Dallas-Fort Worth International (cancellation rate 2.76 %, delay rate 27.86 %)—serve the highest passenger volumes and sit farther from downtown cores. By contrast, the least stressful airport, Salt Lake City International, recorded a cancellation rate of 0.51 % and a delay rate of 15.37 %.
Key Statistics for Pittsburgh and Other Airports
- Pittsburgh International Airport: cancellation rate 1.46 %; delay rate 16.8 % (a 30.85 % improvement from 2021).
- Distance to downtown: approximately 18 miles, or a 28-minute drive.
- Orlando International Airport (benchmark): cancellation rate 1.46 %; delay rate 16.8 % (same as PIT).
- St. Louis Lambert International Airport: positioned immediately below PIT in the ranking.
These figures illustrate that PIT’s delay and cancellation metrics are modestly better than many larger hubs, yet still generate enough disruption to place the airport in the higher-stress tier.
Implications for Travelers
The ranking suggests that passengers traveling through PIT may encounter longer wait times and a higher likelihood of flight changes compared with airports in the lower-stress group. The study’s inclusion of driving distance underscores that proximity to downtown does not fully mitigate stress when flight reliability is suboptimal. Travelers might consider monitoring real-time flight updates and allowing extra buffer time for connections when using PIT, especially during peak travel periods.
