History

Historical Context

When NBC launched the medical drama *ER* in 1995, the series quickly topped weekly ratings and reshaped network primetime strategy. The debut episode drew 22.5 million viewers, and by season three the show commanded a 12.3 rating, surpassing established hits like *Friends*. CBS’s 2026 promotion of *Yellowstone* spin-off *1923* as its #1 new series mirrors that strategy, with Spencer Hudnut highlighting streaming numbers and casting shifts involving Kevin Costner, Taylor Sheridan, and Luke Grimes. The precedent suggests networks will continue leveraging star-driven franchises to dominate viewership, prompting further character revamps and cross-series storylines.
